Sometimes it is just about learning

I am posting this painting to illustrate an often overlooked point: learning is a process.

When I studied art, I learned all about the great paintings of this or that artist, but we never had a class on the process paintings that led to greatness. In fact, I have never heard of such a thing being taught in any discipline.

It should be.

Yes, crit groups get you there. Sort of. But how did any of the great artists learn their techniques? Where are the iterative paintings, sculptures or other manifestations of their processes?

Some museums have started to show examples of this, but I would like to see more. I think the learning processes they illustrate are as valuable as the masterpieces.

This is one of mine.

20091117

I dislike titles for most abstract art. I prefer untitled works, or in my case a reference to the completion date allowing me to track my paintings for tax purposes--if they sell that is.

This is my most recent work: oil on canvas. Presented for your amusement. The lousy photography is due to my laziness.

Hand made christmas card from years gone by

I found this the other day and thought I would post it. I had made this for family and friends about 9 years ago. This is the original master that I worked from for making the cards. I couldn't find any surviving samples of the actual cards that I sent out, but this gives a good idea of what they looked like, albeit not as finely rendered.

Pen and ink with watercolor.

Abstract Geometry

I must admit this is one of my favorites. It draws more on composition & color skills and less on drawing skills, allowing me to focus on balance and flow.

Overall I am very pleased with how this came out. Expect more in this series.

A B&W series

This is the first part of a series I am working on. I am imagining at least two additional pieces although it may grow beyond that.
